Contests

Contests form a major part of the Banding Scene, at Morecambe and over the 125 yrs of our existence we have shared success and failure. We have a balanced approach to contesting with only two or three contests per year.

NATIONAL FINALS, CHELTENHAM 14th SEPTEMBER 2024

Morecambe Band represented Morecambe and the north west of England at the National Brass Band Championships in Cheltenham.
After weeks of preparations we took to the stage and performed the set piece of music entitled The Shipbuilders, a beautiful and descriptive piece of light music by Peter Yorke.
Unfortunately, due to work commitments in Belgium our MD Andrew could not be with us. Instead the ship was captained by Andrew’s father, Billy Porter.
Billy took to the helm, leading us through the final rehearsals and steering us through the performance on stage with finesse. Andrew, Billy, and the bands hard work resulted in an excellent performance resulting in a very credible 5th place out of the top 20 qualifying bands in the third section, of which we are all incredibly proud.
The band will continue to work hard in preparing for our promotion into the second section next year and continue to work on exciting new programmes of music for upcoming concerts.

BLACKPOOL CONTEST 25th FEBRUARY 2024

After many weeks of hard work and determination we are overjoyed to be the North West Area Third Section Champions!

By being placed first, we have again qualified for the National Finals (third year running) and we have also gained promotion to the Second Section as from January 2025.

As always, we are proud of the hard work that all the players have put in and especially the hardwork and determination of our MD Andrew Porter.

KIRKBY LONSDALE ENTERTAINMENT CONTEST

18th JUNE 2023

We could not be prouder! To defend the title and win the Best Entertainment award, Best 3rd section, Hymn tune, March and Deportment award! Thank you to everyone for their hard work and support today at Kirkby Lonsdale Contest.

BLACKPOOL CONTEST 26th February 2023

After weeks of hard work we are over the moon at coming 2nd in the 3rd section at The North West Area Regional Brass Band Championships at Blackpool. We are proud of the hard work that all the players have put in and especially the hardwork and determination of our MD Andrew Porter.

By coming 2nd we have qualified again for the National Finals in September, a fantastic result for the band as we’ve only just been promoted to the 3rd section.

NATIONAL FINALS
The Morecambe Brass Band on Sunday 18th September 2022 competed at the National Brass Band Finals of Great Britain at Cheltenham.
The band were placed 3rd out of the 16 national bands that qualified for the final in the 4th section. The band has already been promoted to the 3rd section for next year and are looking forward to playing at a higher level again.
This 3rd place is even more remarkable as our normal conductor, Andrew Porter, at the last minute due to a more important event, wasn’t able to conduct the band at the contest (see posts on our Facebook page) and we at Morecambe Band are very proud for why Andrew wasn’t available.
We were lucky that David Johnston stepped in to conduct the band and our thanks go to David. David spent just two hours with the band at a rehearsal just a few days before the contest and also a very short practice in the morning before we competed.
Without the hard work and dedication over the last few months by Andrew and Carol Porter and the players, we would not have been able to achieve this 3rd place result.

KIRKBY LONSDALE ENTERTAINMENT CONTEST 19th JUNE 2022

We enjoyed an amazing afternoon at Kirkby Lonsdale Entertainment Contest. Our fabulous soloist Becky Stead won the best instrumentalist and the band won the deportment prize for our marching, best Hymn tune, best fourth section band and the overall Entertainment prize! The biggest reward for us was hearing the cheers from the audience, many of whom have given us kind words of praise and appreciation. Thank you to Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band for organising such a fabulous day.

BLACKPOOL CONTEST 27th FEBRUARY 2022

We are so proud to be announced as 4th section winners in the North West Areas Regional Contest 2022. With thanks to all our members for their hard work and commitment but especially to our MD Andrew Porter for his dedication and hardwork.
